God is present in difficult times …

February 25, 2007

“Do you think the way to tell the story of the Christian journey is to describe its trials and tribulations? It is not. It is to describe God who preserves, accompanies and rules us.

“All the water in all the oceans cannot sink a ship unless it gets inside. Nor can all the trouble in the harm us unless it gets within us. ‘God guards you from every evil.’… None of the things that happen to you, none of the trouble you encounter, have any power to get between you and God, dilute His grace in you, divert His will from you.”

The God idea

February 23, 2007

We talk a lot about how to lead a group. From the best ways to build community to what to study and how to serve, it’s all important and helpful. But sometimes it’s good to step back and put things into perspective. Why do we do small groups? Why do we do church at all?

This is all about God. We have the amazing opportunity to serve a God who loves us, has called us, and has rescued us from the power sin had to make our lives useless, pointless, and meaningless. This Creator God has given us the chance to be a part of his action in this world. Through our obedience to him, he makes us healthier, he connects us to others, and he gives us opportunities to make this world a better place. We get to be a light in places that are hopeless. We get to be salt in places that are bland and full of decay.

All of that to say this: beyond any strategy for building community or any study that can help us get to know God better, the most important tool for any small group is simply to seek God. He will lead us to where we need to be. He will show us where we need to grow. He will initiate change and give us passions for others.

As leaders, we need to pray for our groups. We need to ask God where he wants us to go. We need to wait and listen to the cues he gives us through experiences, through others, and through scripture. As groups, we need to seek God together, realizing that he will lead us to an understanding and a unity that’s much bigger than a weekly or twice-monthly meeting.

It’s my hope and prayer that as we walk together as a church and as small groups that God will do amazing things in our midst. I’m excited to seek, learn, and be a part of what he’s doing.

And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

Tools: Helping your group share openly

February 20, 2007

Whether you’ve been meeting together for two weeks or twenty years, it’s sometimes good to stop and share a little about each other’s lives. Why? Because the more your group knows about one another, the more comfortable they’ll feel sharing their own struggles and joys. Here are a few great questions to start those conversations that North Point Community Church listed on their small group resource site.

Parents and Siblings

  • Where were you born?
  • Where were you raised?
  • How many brothers and sisters do you have?
  • What is/was your relationship with your parents and siblings like?
  • Tell a story from your childhood or adolescence that gives insight into your family.

Spouse and Children

  • Have you ever been married before and if so, how long and how long have you been
  • separated or divorced?
  • How many children, if any, do you have and what are their names and ages?

Vocation and Education

  • Where did you go to school?
  • What did you study or what do you now wish you had studied?
  • Where do you work and how do you spend your waking hours?
  • If you could do anything but what you do now, what would it be?

Hobbies and Interests

  • What do you enjoy doing with your spare time?
  • If rich uncle George died and left you $50,000 that you had to spend and you had one
  • month off, what would you do with the money and time?
  • What have you never done that you wish you could do?

God and Church

  • What church, if any, were you raised in?
  • What were you taught about God as a child?
  • What has been your most significant encounter with God?
  • Describe the state of your relationship with God now.
  • What would you like your relationship with God to be five years from now?
  • When you die and stand before God, what would you like for his first words to you to be?

New Leader Training Dates Set!

February 15, 2007

launch.gif

Our revamped new-leader training event will premiere March 18 and 25. This two-session opportunity is perfect for people who would like to lead a small group or are open to considering small group leadership.

We’ll meet for lunch and discussion from 12:30-2:30 for two weeks in a home near the church. The first week, we’ll look at why we do small groups, what they should look like, and how to best lead one. The second week will dig down into the practical stuff of how to start a group, invite group members, lead a discussion, set the tone, and more. You’ll also learn from experience. The whole meeting will be led in a small-group style with lots of interaction.

The training is limited to 10 participants. If you’re interested in leading a new group or have recently started leading a group, you’d benefit tremendously from this training. To sign up or get more info, email us at glenkirkgroups@gmail.com or call the church office and talk to Arleen.
